Lesson 1,1a,1b,1c
Right now all I can say is WOW!
I started with the World Book Kids. Searching the ape I guess just because it was the first mammal but I can see the students really learning tons. The habitat of an ape is the rainforests of Asia and Afirica.
The students can find activities to do at home with their families by clicking on the games/activities button.
I have read the story of Helen Keller to students when we were talking about biographies in the library and they were very interested in braille. I will use the braille game with them that I found on  games/activites.
Moving on to World Book Student the information about apes gets more indepth. It is wonderful being able to have the text read for those students with a lower reading skill.
I have had the 6th grade students at our school use this page. They compared it to Google and found out it was easier to get the information they were looking for quicker. They didn't have to search through all the sites that pop up on Google.
I also think I would use the Trivia Quiz with the students by having them research a holiday and  them take a quiz.
Using World Book Advanced I think our students will use the search results on the left of the page and the online book on the lower right corner on the page.
The visual dictionary is awesome on World Book Discover.
Having all of these databases through the State Library is very valuable.

Content Standard: Strand of Proficiency: Inquiry and Problem Solving
The 5th grade students will compare a search of fossils on Google and World Book Student.
They will see the information from World Book Student is right at their fingertips and with Google you would have to search through many sites.

I looking at Lesson 1b and 1c they have the same information with a different format.

  1. Wow!! What a super post! World Book is one of my favorite resources for all the reasons you have listed. You've listed so many great activities and ideas for using World Book.
Your observation about the World Book Public Library edition and Foreign Language edition is accurate--same info/different format/features. World Language teachers like the Foreign Language encyclopedia to use with students for additional class resources. One has to search in the foreign language to get accurate results.

    Thanks for the super post!
