Lesson 9 - I visited Ancestry Library and found my marriage license. I also searched for my grandparent and found Richard Crooks on the census his wife is Alice. He was from Canada and my grandma was from Michigan. His wife was Alice and I tried to search her maiden name but wasn't able to find her.
I would like to search more when I have time. This has been a hectic spring.
In searching South Dakota I looked at pictures of Baseball Players 1876-2004. There was a neat picture of the Cleveland Baseball Club season 1920. Each players names was right underneath their feet. They all stood in a long line. It's interesting looking at old pictures.

Lesson 10 - Wrap it up!!!! Whew!

Information over load in a good way. I discovered the SD State Library has so much to offer for schools and the public. If I had to choose a particular area it would be the genealogy databases. It was fun searching for family. Also, the Tumblebook Library was at the top of my list. As I'm still new to my position I will have to take some time to explore the resources and become more confident in my knowledge of them.

I will be promoting the resources by using the handouts for students and teachers. In promoting the resources to the students, this being my first year, I can see I have to incorporate them into my lesson plans at earlier grade levels.

Even though I wasn't consistent with doing a lesson weekly this was a great way for me to learn more about the SD State Library. I looking forward to searching more.
Lesson 9 - Genealogy

Ancestry Library: I wasn't able to research because I'm working on this at home. I didn't have time to do it at school but will be making time for it.

Heritage Quest: I browsed the publications and found if you are interested in your ancestory there are many avenues to help you with your search. I searched my parents in the census. I found my dad in the 1940's. He was married and had my 2 older brothers. The census had my parents being born in Sweden and that is not true.
In researching my husbands parents I think as far as I know the information is correct but I would have to check with him.

Sanborn Maps: Are the maps just of the cities that are the county seats? I was going to search Wilmot or Peever and wasn't able to find. I thought the county seat was in Wilmot years ago but don't know for sure. So I searched Sisseton and see that C.E.McGowan Lumber Co. was there and they must have had a branch in Wilmot. The Wilmot Lumberyard used to be C.E. McGowan.

I took was off for awhile and when I got back on I found Wilmot but no Peever. The building that I think are still being used are the Opera House (an auto shop) and Grand Central Hotel (an antique shop or mall).

Looking forward to the History and Genealogy Resources but have to end my day for now. Have a great week everyone.
Lesson 8 - World Cat, CAMIO and more

I performed a title phase search for Green Eggs and Ham. Libraries Worldwide, 2509
The top library is Black Hills State University. Call Number LC: PZ8.3.G276; PS3513.E2
Dewey: Fic
When I clicked on subject there are 57 results found. The books all have to do with eating and there are some in different languages.
It was fairly easy to do a search on World Cat. Just seeing all the copies there are out there in the world is amazing.

OAIster - After entering South Dakota I searched Two Best and the Two Worst Decisions. The article was very interesting to read about a ranch in Midland, SD. The ups and downs of life on a ranch are just a real as the ups and downs in the rest of the world. I'm not sure a lot of people understand the struggles there are with farming/ranching. Not to say there aren't struggle else where.

CAMIO - Wow! There are amazing artworks to see here. This would be great for art teachers to show there students.
Lesson 7 - EBooks on EBSCO
I entered Nebraska and found 56 results. The copyrights ranged from 1966 to 2002 all published by University of Nebraska.
It was great to be able to hover on the sheet of paper with a magnafying glass and a wind pops up with information.
Using the table of contents and the most relavent pages in the ebook was helpful.
There were 20 results for the Consititution Day. I thought The Complete Idiot's Guide to the American Presidents was interesting.
I created an account.
We had a work day at school today. Oh happy day.
Lesson 6 - Gale Virtual Reference Library
I searched Bowling ,Beatniks and Bell Bottoms: Pop Culture of 20th and 21st Century America.
Looking at page 195 two famous food products making cooking quick and easy were Campbell's Soup and Oreo cookies invented in 1912, became America's favorite packaged cookie. Being able to listen to the article was great and I can see where it will be helpful to many students.

Zinc is a mineral that is essentil for a healthy immune system. The RDA for zinc levels are different for all ages and sex, for intance 5mg for children under 1, 10mg for children 1 to 10 yrs. etc.

I reviewed a few other blogs and it is always interesting to read. I checked out mlcleve and Meade School Dist. 46-1 Libray Media Services.

Long time no see! I'm getting back to the challenge.
Lesson 5 - Proquest
I searched type 2 diabetes. I found several articles that were helpful. I need to spend some extra time here but I found Proquest to very informative. Later on I want to search drug metformin for diabetes. My husband is on this medication.
I posted on My Happy Place's blog. This is the 1st blog I chose and it was funny she had checked out my blog. What are the odds of that happening again.
I also searched librarain and found 2 publications. The Evolution of a Traditional Library to a Learning Commons was very interesting.

Lesson 4: SIRS DISCOVERER

This 4th lesson is so exciting. I'm going to be doing a magazine/newspaper scavenger hunt with the 6th grade class and it will be so interesting to have them compare this database with the hard copies in the library.
In the database features I found the new nonfiction books interesting and you have the option to print them.
I found the information on Discoverer interersting and will look into the Reasearcher for sure. Just out of time so will be posting more later when I get time to finish up this lesson.
Have a great week everyone.
Lesson 3: LearningExpress Library

Creating an account on Learning Express Library is very easy.
Browsing the exams and testing one out was interesting. Wow, found out my geometry is rusty. You could remember a decagon having 10 sides as 10 being a decade. Being able to have the answers explained as you finish each question is a great tool.

Job searching and resumes are very easy to use.

Searched reading and looked at a ebook 501 Reading Comprehension. There are many tips to help with reading. I like how there were other titles of interest available from LearningExpress (Reading Comprehension Success in 20 Minutes a Day, Vocabulary and Spelling Success in 20 Minutes a Day).

There is so much to share from the LearningExpress Library. It will be interesting sharing information with the staff and also a challenge.
Interesting lesson.

Lesson 2: Chilton Library, Mango Languages, and Tumblebooklibrary

Chilton Library: 3 things that need to be done at 30,000 miles.
1. battery performance check
2. engine air filter
3. radiator, coolers, heater and AC hoses
My husband was very interested in the page. He went on it while I was posting.
Our students in the Ag classes will like this too.

Mango Languages: I tried out a lesson and it will help me out as I work one on one with a spanish speaking student. It really help be able to record your own voice and compare it with the coaches voice. Look forward to doing more on the site.

Tumblebooklibrary: This will be a great site to use in the library with the students.
I done know if anyone else had noticed but I tried the Tumble Tour at the bottom of the page and it is different than the site is. It said there is an educator button on the bottom of the page but I couldn't find it. If anyone else found it please let me know. Maybe I shouldn't have done this when the Superbowl was on. Hahaha! It will be sharing this with teachers and parents.

Lesson 1,1a,1b,1c
Right now all I can say is WOW!
I started with the World Book Kids. Searching the ape I guess just because it was the first mammal but I can see the students really learning tons. The habitat of an ape is the rainforests of Asia and Afirica.
The students can find activities to do at home with their families by clicking on the games/activities button.
I have read the story of Helen Keller to students when we were talking about biographies in the library and they were very interested in braille. I will use the braille game with them that I found on  games/activites.
Moving on to World Book Student the information about apes gets more indepth. It is wonderful being able to have the text read for those students with a lower reading skill.
I have had the 6th grade students at our school use this page. They compared it to Google and found out it was easier to get the information they were looking for quicker. They didn't have to search through all the sites that pop up on Google.
I also think I would use the Trivia Quiz with the students by having them research a holiday and  them take a quiz.
Using World Book Advanced I think our students will use the search results on the left of the page and the online book on the lower right corner on the page.
The visual dictionary is awesome on World Book Discover.
Having all of these databases through the State Library is very valuable.

Content Standard: Strand of Proficiency: Inquiry and Problem Solving
The 5th grade students will compare a search of fossils on Google and World Book Student.
They will see the information from World Book Student is right at their fingertips and with Google you would have to search through many sites.

I looking at Lesson 1b and 1c they have the same information with a different format.

1st year

Looking forward to digging in and learning more. Challenge on!!! :)
